Host an event downtown
Festivals, markets, car shows and concerts are what fill 7th Street. Here is what the City asks of an organizer, and how Main Street can help people find your event.
What the City requires
Special events on public streets and property go through City Hall. Start there, early.
- 1
Contact City Hall for the application
The City handles special event applications and procedures directly. Call 352-523-5051, the number listed on its event page.
- 2
Line up a nonprofit sponsor and insurance
The City states that every event must be sponsored by a nonprofit organization, and that insurance will be required.
- 3
Closing a street? Add the right permit
A City street needs a local road closure permit application. The City also asks for a state road closure permit application for any closure of Meridian Avenue, with the closed sections marked on the City map.
Marking up the City map
The City asks for three colors on the map you send with a closure request:
- RedSections of Meridian Avenue to be closed
- BlueLocal roads to be closed
- YellowDetour routes
Pick a date that works
Downtown already has standing traditions. Check them before you choose, so your event adds to a weekend rather than competing with one.
See the month viewGet the word out
Once your date is set, put it where downtown visitors look.
Submit it to the calendar
Submit your event and a volunteer checks it before it goes live. It then appears on the events page, the homepage, and in the calendar feed people subscribe to on their phones.
Tell the businesses along the route
Shops and restaurants plan staff and stock around busy days, and a street closure changes how their customers reach them. Downtown business owners share news in the Main Street business community.
Ask Main Street for help
Volunteers, sponsors and introductions to the businesses nearby. Get in touch.
The City sets these requirements and can change them. This summary follows the City’s event application page, which also has the permit forms and the City map. Check it for the current version before you apply.
